Puttin My Mouse Ears Back On

Today was my first day at Disney Consumer Products. I have a great office cube. It’s metal and it has a door! My official title is Coordinator, Tween Apparel (Non-Disney)… that means “Temp.” Sadly, there are lots of temps there, and many are nearing the end of their 15 month term without the promise of a job in their near future. Hopefully they’ll find something soon!

My office is across from my friend Laurent’s. I really like my boss too! She’s very cool, very chill yet direct. I worked on a project of redoing binders for her today, and I spent some time with my co-worker, Colleen, learning the Approval Software.

Our office is really nice! We have a food commissary! I got a Mediterranean wrap today for lunch. Also during lunch was an art exhibit outside. A really awesome splatter paint artist was painting to music when I went outside after eating. He did a really cool Mickey Mouse.

I don’t have a computer yet, but one has been ordered for me. I am not sure if I’ll be able to chat online, but Twitter is probably not blocked. Anyhow, I’ll keep you posted. So far, I like it!

No on Prop 8!

Today, I went down to Redondo Beach to officiate the marriage of Lynne & Laurie from Sante Fe, NM. They were a wonderful couple, 19 years strong! It was such an honor to perform their ceremony and get to know them. I met up with them at their relative, Lisa’s, house. She and her fiance Rich were also really awesome people!

The 5 of us headed to Hermosa Beach for the ceremony at sunset. Since I had my camera with me from taking pix at the beach earlier, I took some photos of them before and after the wedding. We danced on the sand to “Going to the Chapel,” then I performed the ceremony. After, we held hands in a circle and danced and sang along with “Over the Rainbow (50 First Dates version)” before walking back to the cars.

What a great night! I love performing weddings!!!

Vote NO on Prop 8!

4th Folder, 4th Photo

Open your pictures folder, open the 4th folder and post the 4th picture. Then, explain it!

This is Paul Bellantoni. He’s my friend and my sister’s roommate. He’s putting on ice skates here. We were in Van Nuys for Elysia’s birthday party this past August!

2:02am

I’m heading to bed in a few minutes, but wanted to do a quick weekend recap.

Friday – Drove up to Michele’s, in Lancaster, after traffic died down. Hung out for a short bit, then went to bed around 10:30pm.

Saturday – Woke up at 5:45am, got a shower, packed my things and Michele & I went to Panera Bread at 6:40am. We met up with Katy at the church at 7am for her 9am wedding. The pastor and his wife seemed very rushed, and Katy was pressured to get ready much too quickly. Michele & I got as many pix as we could of her getting ready, but it was a bit difficult to capture that moment due to the time constraint and the background scenery.

The ceremony was also a bit limiting for photography. I had less than 1 min to get from photographing Katy getting into her dress to getting into the chapel, put my flash on and meter for the open, back-lit doors that the procession would be coming through… not ideal! I wasn’t able to capture any good shots of them coming down the aisle due to the lack of time for me to set up. I made up for it later with shots during the ceremony. Group shots also went very well. I set them up, Michele framed and pulled the trigger. Great teamwork!

The reception was lit very nicely. I was able to shoot without a flash for quite a bit. I got some fun shots there, and will try to post them on my business blog in a few days.

After the ceremony, we took a few shots of Greg & Katy outside before heading back to Michele’s. I transferred pix to my laptop, then headed home around sunset. Long day!

I got home at 7pm exactly, took a short nap, then got up to head to Koji’s. John & I had dinner, then Bobby & Laury met up with us. Soon after, Lillian and her daughter arrived, followed by Paul, then Lyse, then lots of other friends. We had some drinks and did some karaoke til almost 2am. I sang Southside (Moby) with John, Epic (Faith No More) with Lyse, Dan and Kyle, and Whatever I Fear (Toad the Wet Sprocket) by myself. I was freaking tired when we left, but John & I still managed to play an hour of Tetris when we got home.

Sunday – slept in, late! I was planning on going to Jo-Ann’s Fabrics, but never made it. I went to Paul’s and got my hair trimmed though. John & I then had dinner and wandered around Downtown Glendale. We checked out some Halloween stores, but there was nothing I wanted. I have no clue what I’m going to be this year and it’s only a few days away!

Being that I start my job on Tuesday at Disney in Tween Apparel, and that John is going to be writing a parody of High School Musical with his friend Greg, we decided to rent and watch HSM. It was ridiculous! I will probably see the 2nd one as well eventually, but man… that was hard to sit through!

Heading to bed now… 2:14am

A Pirate’s Life for Me!

Yo ho, yo ho, a Disney job for me! Starting Tuesday, I will be working at Disney Consumer Products as a Category Coordinator (or something like that). Notice I said “at” not “for.” I will be working for Datrose, a staffing agency. My contract is 15 months! That’s a long freakin’ contract! I will not have any Disney benefits or Discounts, unfortunately. At this point, I am just happy to have a job. I hope I will be allowed to park in the Disney parking lot… I’ll find out on Tuesday. I see shuttle bus stops all over the complex… makes me wonder!

The greatness: DCP is 2.8 miles from my apartment! I do not have to take the freeway unless I want to (for one exit). The salary is good! It’s not what I was making at Stores, but it’s close! The people and the building are really cool. My friend Laurent will be working with me! He’s on the creative side, I’ll be on the production side of the same department: Tween! I better watch HSM soon to get caught up!

The not-so-greatness: No silver-pass to Disneyland, no group insurance, and no vacation accrual. I will not really “feel” like part of the Disney family since I’ll still be a “temp” employee for over a year. Also, after about 12 or 13 months, if the economy doesn’t get better, I will have to start looking for a new job (not so good on the resume – too many jobs show instability) but, hopefully, the economy will be better and they can hire me permanently at 15 months. It is possible I can try to find another Disney temp job after that; but hopefully, by that point, I will have a full time, perm position with them and a future with the company! I’m really tired of moving around!

I’m not feeling super excited yet, but I am happy. I am very happy that I have a job, and the people I’ll be working with seem really great! I will be great at the job, and hopefully I will be able to grow. What I will be missing; however, is being in management – working as a supervisor and team leader. If all goes well, I may be able to get back to that one day. Sometimes in life, you have to take a few steps back to take a step forward…

So, in an effort to move forward, I am marching on to the Disney lot on Tuesday morning! Wish me luck!!!

I’ll Be There For You!

Yesterday, I roamed around the WB Lot for a bit with John on his lunch. We walked by many fun sets and even stopped over at Central Perk! Check out pix here!

Bats Day is Coming Soon! Nov 8th & 9th!

Long-Ass Day

I woke up at 8am, fed the cats and got a shower. I had an interview with Disney at 10am. It was a great interview. The job is a long-term temp (no benefits), but I really could us a job right now and I felt so energized once in the building! It was great to see character everywhere! There was a beautiful Alice mural of her falling down the rabbit hole in the stairwell. Really awesome! I ran into my friend Laurent too! He just started there 3 weeks ago. I worked with him at Stores. I’d be working with him too! I will find out tomorrow if I get this job! Wish me luck!!!

After the iView, I went home for a bit and moved my computer desk and cleaned up all the cords and dust behind it. My allergies were so bad after that!

I took Gracie & Sandy to the vet at 2pm. Sandy’s eyes are all weird and Gracie’s lips are swollen. Turns out that Gracie may be allergic to ceramic (bowl for eating) or possibly the vinegar mix that I spray her with when she’s bad. The vet thinks its the former, but told me to change the vinegar/water to just water in case. Gracie also has soft poo. Bah! Sandy may have a respiratory thing. All the cats are on vetri lysene now… immunity builder! We’ll see how they are in a week.

I got home close to 4pm, spent some time cramping on the couch and then worked on the computer room again – vacuuming and finishing putting together all the computer attachments.

Lyse showed up at 6:20pm or so, and I fed the kitties. She & I then went to Katsuya at the Americana for a Barfly shop. The food was excellent! We got some damn good martinis too! Mine was rose flavored!!!

Got home just before 10pm, emailed a few people back, checked CNN for updates and now I’m typing this. Tomorrow, heading to WB at noon to stalk stage 19 (Pushing Daisies) and roaming around the lot for 2 hours. Then, home to pack and heading up to Lancaster in the evening. I’m shooting Greg & Katy’s wedding on Saturday morning!!!

I Was So Proud of Myself…

For weeks, the kitten has decided that the bathroom garbage needed to be knocked over and spilled out all over the bathroom. It was NOT allowed to stand upright!

This has been a constant battle for John & I, until this morning. I FINALLY outsmarted the kitten! I know, I know! Anyhow, I put a small rubbermaid step stool on top of the garbage can. I totally won! She can’t knock it over! I felt so proud of myself! I went back to the bedroom to finish getting dressed.

When I returned to the bathroom about 10 minutes later, this is what I found!!!!

Gracie Attacks the Toilet Paper

She’s NEVER done this before! I then tried to reprimand her with a water / vinegar mix!

I’m Tired of Joe, the Plubmer and the Pounding of Socialism Attacks

Joe, “the plumber” may be a decent guy, but I don’t think we need to keep hearing about his situation. To be honest, if I had $250,000, I’d be thoroughly willing to pay an extra 3% in taxes to help this country’s schools, hospitals, infrastructure, transportation and public servants (police, fire, etc.)!

This country is NOT purely Capitalistic. Nothing is that black and white! We have small pieces of socialism and communism and other isms spread throughout our society. We are diverse and all of these isms play an important part of our beliefs and goals! Read this, from Wiki: “In the schema of historical materialism, communism is the idea of a free society with no division or alienation, where mankind is free from oppression and scarcity. A communist society would have no governments, countries, or class divisions. Socialism is the intermediate system between capitalism and communism, when the government is in the process of changing the means of ownership from privatism, to collective ownership.”

Taxes are socialism… they are, no matter what you want to call it. Gov collects money from individuals and businesses and spends it on things for the good of the whole society. That is why we have things like roads, schools and hospitals. Nobody, in their right mind, would argue that this is a bad idea. We NEED schools, safe roads, hospitals, police and fire!

Next, this whole “Bail Out / Rescue Plan” is socialist! McCain voted for this; therefore, it is hypocritical for him to call Obama a socialist when he is also participating in socialist ideas. Not that either of them wanted to vote for this bail-out, but they KNEW it was necessary to get credit flowing again. See, sometimes socialism IS a part of our society, and it’s a necessary part to keep people and businesses alive. Our government MUST sometimes step in to make things better for our country as a whole. There is NOTHING wrong with this. I am tired of this term being thrown around with such negative connotations.

I believe that businesses and people are too greedy to take care of one another. I believe that, without government, we would not have public schools, safe roads, nor would we have strong police and fire departments in our cities. The private sector will NOT do its job to take care of these things. That is why we NEED taxes. That is why those who can afford to pay their bills and still have money left over can also afford to help out a little bit more with additional taxes.

If we cut taxes for everyone, then we will have no money to take care of the veins of our country… no money for teachers, firemen, police, public works, transit workers, construction workers for roads and public buildings… we NEED money to pay for these vital workers. We need taxes to pay down our country’s debt and keep these important people working. When taxes are cut, teachers get laid off, students suffer from overcrowded classrooms and having to share outdated books. When we cut taxes, roads fall into disrepair and traffic gets worse, people have trouble getting to work. When we cut taxes, firemen are let go or quit, fires erupt and they burn many more houses as we won’t have enough men to help put these fires out. This is not the world I want to live in. I want these people and programs funded and funded well. I even want to fund other great programs – to help the homeless and jobless, to help sick people without insurance, to help children learn arts and music, to help every day people learn about culture, art and history… our life should not be so dull and mundane as to deny us of these great things!

Obama’s plan to tax those who can afford it is what we need to keep this country alive. Government, good, intelligent, compassionate government, is necessary for redistributing this money to our country’s organs. Without this “socialist” task, we fail…miserably!

Doubting my Self Worth – Temporarily

I’ve been laid off twice this year, no fault of my own. I’ve been unemployed for a month and a half now, and I am NOT finding any jobs I qualify for. I find jobs I’m way overqualified for. Those jobs have lower pay than I am used to living on, and they would not be very challenging. I find jobs that I am mostly qualified for, but the job requirements seem to be getting more and more stringent; and, I never get a call when I apply. Where do I belong? I miss Town Hall.

I spent this morning, as I do every weekday morning, hunting for jobs online. I look at local companies’ sites, look at craigslist, look at indeed.com (monster, hotjobs, etc.), and I follow up with my recruiters. Every day, there are fewer and fewer jobs posted. Every day, the job postings get more specific and the requirements become more difficult to meet. I apply for most of them anyhow, if I meed 80% or more of the requirements. I am a fast learner and I have a lot of experience.

It seems that my experience doesn’t mean much. What I’ve heard is that I have held too many jobs. I just want an interview. Person to person… I can share my vast experience in project management, human resources, team leadership, state law compliance knowledge, employee management and evaluations, staff orientations and training, organizational development and proficiency enhancements. I can do so much for a company and its employees; and, I am not just organized, I am creative and compassionate too! Why can’t I find a great job? Why can’t I find a job?!

Women’s Night Out at M-Bar

Tonight was Women’s Night Out at M-Bar in Hollywood. I have never been before, but it was super fun. Elysia spoke about breast cancer and her upcoming surgery. We raised $97! There was also a phenomenal hula hooper there: Anah Reichenbach of Hoopalicious. She was a semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent. Damn, she sure does have talent! There was an LA Times Columnist, Pat Morrison, talking about the propositions. She was really interesting! I think I’ll start reading her column! There was a singing group after her, then something really incredible… a man (the one and only man performer of the night) who could whistle poly-phonically. His name is Gerrin Berry, and he is a former member of Sha Na Na. I’ve never heard whistling like this. He’s one of few in the world who can do it!

Anyhow, it was a really fun night. Now, time for water, cat cuddling and bed 🙂

Politics

Just because I haven’t posted a political blog in a few days, doesn’t mean I’m not heavily paying attention to the election.

The debate was good. I think McCain’s facial expressions were a bit odd. He mentioned Joe, the Plumber too many times. Obama did very well. He stayed on target, knew his subjects well, and spoke with passion. He was off on a few small facts, but nothing that should deter voters. McCain was off on many facts. That probably won’t hurt him either. Personally, I think they both need to focus on the issues and drop the attacks. People want to know what their President will be able to do for them and this country.

I fully agree with Obama that the wealthy should help this country stay on its feet. People say this is socialist or marxist. I don’t care how they label it. If I had over $250K, I’d be more than happy to pay 3% more in taxes to help out schools, transportation, infrastructure, job creation, technological research and more! The people in the middle and lower classes cannot afford to take care of themselves, let alone this country’s infrastructure and development. The wealthy can actually do this without much stress. I agree with Joe Biden that it would be very Patriotic to do so! I could only be lucky enough to have enough money to help my fellow Americans more than I do now with my piddly donations to charities. I believe that true American greatness comes from taking care of those who are unable to care for themselves. I said “unable” not “unwilling!”

Anyhow, CNN has a new reporter… I need to go research this guy and see what he’s all about. Jack Cafferty is off today… boo for me, yay for him!

PS, please remember to vote NO on Prop 4 and NO on Prop 8!!!

And the Hunt Goes On

I had a great interview yesterday for a company in Glendale, less than 1 mile from my apartment. I would be able to walk there on nice days!!! The job is working for the employee training department as a coordinator (and eventually, as a trainer). It is perfect! It would be a dream come true to work in the non-profit sector again! I hope they call me for a 2nd interview. I could tell they were hesitant about my background (being overqualified), but I assured them that this was exactly what I wanted to do and the type of company I would be honored to work for! I told them to please not let salary be a factor, as I would rather be happy with my life than paid well for a job I have no passion about. I guess we’ll see what happens. I have my fingers crossed. I can make up the money with my photography. I’ll make this work. I just really hope they want me!

Today, I emailed a recruiter as a follow-up to a job I applied for 2 weeks ago as I saw the job reposted on Craigslist. She wrote me back saying that her client would not be happy with my resume as I’ve had too many jobs. Ugh, this kills me. I am desperately looking for a company to stick with and grow with. I hate moving around. I have been laid off three times in the past few years due to reasons that have nothing to do with me. It is so unfortunate that they would overlook me and lose out on having me work for them because of this. I am a wonderful employee, dedicated, loyal, hard working, intelligent and friendly. I am loved by all my bosses and co-workers. I just can’t handle being overlooked because of my unfortunate situation that was completely out of my control. Really upsets me.

In a blast from the past, I found a job at ArtCenter that I would be perfect for! It combines web design, research, coordination, orientations and more! It is an exact match for my skills and background. I submitted my resume. I would be very happy at ArtCenter. It’s non-profit, a creative environment, and in a beautiful location (very close to home). I really enjoyed my time there.

I also haven’t heard from BRC Imaginative Arts yet. I put in a follow-up to them, and would be very happy there as well. The salary is low, but the job would be fun. Still, I’d be much happier at SCPH, so I am hoping and wishing that they call me! Please send me and the Universe your great thoughts! I really want this job!!

Pearsonville Workshop

This past weekend was one of the best weekends ever, photography-wise! I left Glendale on Friday at 1pm. I was going to be meeting up with my new friend, Diane, at 4pm at the Motel 6 in Ridgecrest. Well, I ended up in traffic with her in Acton, and we stayed in touch the entire drive out.

I stopped at this great little blown-over house in Mojave to take a few pix on my way. I got to town before Diane, so I stopped at Albertons for water and snacks. After that, I met her at the Motel 6 and we settled in for a bit before heading to Denny’s for dinner.

I stayed up really late to adjust to the time-frame we’d be working with all weekend. She flew in from Vermont, then drove through the desert; so, she passed out early.

On Saturday, we got up, had breakfast at Denny’s, then hit up Wal-Mart for some essential gear to fight the winds. Our workshop started at 1:30pm at the Heritage Inn. We met our classmates, then discussed light painting, UrbEx, gels and snoots, flashlights, strobes and how to navigate the junkyard. We had an hour to grab food after the workshop lesson before meeting up at the junkyard. During that time, Diane & I went to Subway, Taco Bell and got changed into winter gear at the gas station.

Once in the yard, I wandered around looking for a spot to shoot. I then met up with Joe to learn some hands-on techniques. I then wandered around practicing. Later on, I met up with Troy for more hands-on learning, then wandered towards the back of the yard to practice on my own for a bit. Throughout the night, I ran into people, collaborated with them on images and ideas.

Throughout the night, I kept going back to the car to warm up. The winds were strong and it was sooooo cold out! I lost feeling in my fingers and toes many times. I had a lot of creative juices flowing and got some great shots that night. I went over them once back at the hotel just after 1:30am.

On Sunday, we met up at Kristy’s for breakfast with the entire group. We talked life, music, iPhones and photography. After that, we met up at the Heritage Inn for critiquing and additional pointers. It was so helpful! I really enjoyed seeing the different perspectives of subjects that I also shot. Once we left the meeting, Diane & I went to Wal-Mart to get more winter gear (yes, we actually needed more)! Then off to KFC, Subway and the gas station to change into our additional winter gear. We got some hand-warmers and I got toe-warmers. They really helped, but were a bit uncomfortable to walk on all night. Thankfully, the winds were lower than expected, and didn’t need to wear everything I bought. I felt like a marshmellow man as it was with so many layers!

Once in the junkyard, I stuck with Joe and Diane in the racetrack for a bit before heading off on my own to the back corner (near the Nazarene Bus). I spent about 2 hours back there, running into only one other student. I started walking toward the center of the yard, playing Marco Polo with Diane until we found each other. It was very difficult to see people, but the yard was remarkably well lit by the moonlight. I LOVED being out there alone. It was so beautiful and eerie. I felt so alive and so connected to the past with all these rusty old cars and trucks around me.

I stuck around the campers for a bit, then met up with a few people by the Cadillac Camper. It was 1pm, and time to meet up to leave; but, nobody around me wanted to go. I sure didn’t want to leave. Joe called Troy and we got another 1/2 hour. Everyone was cool with it. We got some more shots, and ended up not leaving until a few minutes to 2am. I could’ve stayed for a few more hours, but once in the warm car, I was ready to turn in.

Back at the hotel, I looked at my pix, then passed out around 3am or so. We got up early on Monday to pack up and check out. Diane & I decided to drive back together, so we dropped her rental off at Enterprise, then met up with Wayne & Patrick to visit the nearby ghost-towns. We went to Randsburg and Johannesburg for about an hour each before Diane & I started our drive back to LA. Traffic was smooth, so we got back pretty fast. There was a lot of traffic once we hit Burbank though, so we got off and went to BJ’s for dinner before I dropped her off at BUR airport.

It was sad to say good-bye and end our amazing weekend. I have tons of photos, and I’ll be putting them up later tonight or tomorrow. I can’t wait to go back to the desert and do some more night photography! Wow, what a weekend!
