Yo ho, yo ho, a Disney job for me! Starting Tuesday, I will be working at Disney Consumer Products as a Category Coordinator (or something like that). Notice I said “at” not “for.” I will be working for Datrose, a staffing agency. My contract is 15 months! That’s a long freakin’ contract! I will not have any Disney benefits or Discounts, unfortunately. At this point, I am just happy to have a job. I hope I will be allowed to park in the Disney parking lot… I’ll find out on Tuesday. I see shuttle bus stops all over the complex… makes me wonder!
The greatness: DCP is 2.8 miles from my apartment! I do not have to take the freeway unless I want to (for one exit). The salary is good! It’s not what I was making at Stores, but it’s close! The people and the building are really cool. My friend Laurent will be working with me! He’s on the creative side, I’ll be on the production side of the same department: Tween! I better watch HSM soon to get caught up!
The not-so-greatness: No silver-pass to Disneyland, no group insurance, and no vacation accrual. I will not really “feel” like part of the Disney family since I’ll still be a “temp” employee for over a year. Also, after about 12 or 13 months, if the economy doesn’t get better, I will have to start looking for a new job (not so good on the resume – too many jobs show instability) but, hopefully, the economy will be better and they can hire me permanently at 15 months. It is possible I can try to find another Disney temp job after that; but hopefully, by that point, I will have a full time, perm position with them and a future with the company! I’m really tired of moving around!
I’m not feeling super excited yet, but I am happy. I am very happy that I have a job, and the people I’ll be working with seem really great! I will be great at the job, and hopefully I will be able to grow. What I will be missing; however, is being in management – working as a supervisor and team leader. If all goes well, I may be able to get back to that one day. Sometimes in life, you have to take a few steps back to take a step forward…
So, in an effort to move forward, I am marching on to the Disney lot on Tuesday morning! Wish me luck!!!
