With the election just over a month away, it’s time to really familiarize yourself with the propositions that affect ALL of us in this great state!
Prop 1A – YES
Hell yeah! A high speed train from LA to San Fran! I wish we had this right now! Let’s get this thing built!!! Click to learn more
Prop 2 – HELL YES
Requires that farms use more humane conditions for animals raised for food. Though I am a vegetarian, I respect that my friends and family members eat meat. I still believe there are ways to help the animals raised for food live better lives and not endure as much pain as they are currently subjected to!
Here are the details:
* Requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely.
* Exceptions made for transportation, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes.
* Provides misdemeanor penalties, including a fine not to exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment in jail for up to 180 days.
This isn’t too much to ask, seriously! Vote YES on Prop 2! Click for more info: Click here!
Prop 3 – Yes, Sounds Good
This is a Children’s Hospital Bond Act, Grand Program and Statute. More hospitals are always helpful! Here are the details:
* Authorizes $980,000,000 in bonds, to be repaid from state’s General Fund, to fund the construction, expansion, remodeling, renovation, furnishing and equipping of children’s hospitals.
* Designates that 80 percent of bond proceeds go to hospitals that focus on children with illnesses such as leukemia, cancer, heart defects, diabetes, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis.
* Requires that qualifying children’s hospitals provide comprehensive services to a high volume of children eligible for governmental programs and meet other requirements.
* Designates that 20 percent of bond proceeds go to University of California general acute care hospitals
Prop 4 – NO WAY!
This prop, if passed, creates a waiting period and parental notification before allowing a teen to have an abortion. I know this is a tricky one. Parents WANT to know what their teens are doing, of course; but, there are very violent, abusive parents who have raped their children and would beat them if they ever went to the authorities (even if just for an abortion of the incestuous child). These kids NEED protection! Some of them are afraid to go to the cops, but they are willing to go to clinics and abort a fetus created from abuse and incest!
Another thing to think about is the fact that these kids, if not allowed to get abortions without parental consent would likely try ‘hanger abortions’ on themselves… possibly killing themselves and likely ruining any changes of ever having a baby in the future. Some would hide their pregnancies and drink and do drugs to cause a miscarriage. Others would have the baby and possibly leave it to die in a dumpster. Yes, this HAS happened to frighten teens!
Vote NO to protect teens! When it comes to incest and rape, we are their only hope! Here are some details: click here, here, and here.
Prop 5 – Yes
This is the non-violent offender rehab act. Our prisons are overcrowded, and people who smoke pot (illegally) are taking up our tax dollars and room in prison. These people, as well as other druggies, don’t belong in jail. They need rehab, and a rehab system that works! This prop, if voted in, will provide funding to help these non-violent offenders get help!
I understand that parents, like Martin Sheen, want this to fail because they believe that their children should face hard jail time to “wake them up” to encourage them to quit drugs. I totally understand and respect this; however, too many pot smokers end up in jail (for a day, a month, or more) and they really don’t need to be there. They need rehab! Our prisons are overcrowded and our tax dollars would be better spent elsewhere than on pot smokers. Here’s a link: click here.
Prop 6 – Leaning No
The Safe Neighborhoods Act. I am leaning no because this bill will divert funds from California’s schools, hospitals and childcare centers. It is also said to target poor people, forcing recipients of public housing subsidies to submit to annual criminal background checks with the intention of withdrawing the housing subsidies of people with recent criminal convictions. This is very discriminatory! Click here to read more about this.
Prop 7 – Leaning No
Renewable energy bill. You’d think I’d be for this off the bat, but I’m concerned about smaller businesses who are working on innovative ways to create renewable energy. There is evidence that this bill could put them out of business. We need innovation! We also need renewable energy, now! I’m so torn here. After reading this, I’m really leaning NO. Please read for yourself and decide, but I’m really feeling NO on this one.
Prop 8 – NO Freakin’ Way! No, No, No!
This prop, if passed, eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry! Okay, first of all, what right does a governing body to tell people who love each other that they cannot be together in love and marriage, by each other’s bedside at the hospital when ill, and able to make decisions about their loved ones’ things after death?!
It’s not fair to just give that right to hetero-couples! It’s just unfair, discriminatory, and unjust! Ugh, makes me sick! Not to mention, California has already approved marriages for gay and lesbian couples, and many have married. We cannot take that away from them. This is a very cruel and hateful proposition! Stop the Hate, No on Prop 8!! Click here for more info!
Prop 9 – No
Criminal Justice System changes. This is a tough one. The victim’s families want a yes vote on prop 9, injecting them into the justice system more than they are legally allowed at this point. Sadly, they are emotional and biased (with good reason to be). If I were a victim’s family member, I am sure I’d feel the same way.
However, there are soooo many cases where criminals were incarcerated due to self-defense (especially women who were abused). It would make it much harder for them to make their cases and it would extend their time in jail. This is scary. Please read these cases: click here. Here’s a link for info from both sides: click here.
Prop 10 – No
Alternative Fuel and Renewable Energy bill. This bill was created by a man who owns a natural gas company. He has raised money to put this measure on the ballot. Energy groups and economic groups agree that it will NOT help the environment. It will make this man very wealthy, but will not remotely solve the problem! Here is more information.
Prop 11 – No
Redistricting. I am usually for this, but it has to be done right. It appears that this bill will help mask budgets, hiding the truth from the public. There is a lot of vague allowances for those hired in new districts. I think they need to rewrite this bill to include transparency and auditing! For now, I vote No! Click here for more info.
Prop 12 – I Guess So, Yeah
Loans for Veterans. I am mostly for this, but it also includes veterans who never left US soil (but worked on war efforts). What makes their life more important than mine? Why should they get an easy, low-interest home loan, but I can’t? Well, that does annoy me. However, MOST veterans have actually fought in wars. Many are wounded and cannot work. This would be very helpful to them. I won’t hold them back even though I think some people will take advantage of this. I won’t hold them back for selfish reasons… though I want a home too, and I know I work hard! Oh well, let them have their homes. If I can’t own a home, at least someone else (who’s worked hard) will. Click here for more info.
