Heading into the Desert

So, in an hour, I am leaving for Ridgecrest, CA for a photography workshop. Thankfully, I haven’t maxed out my business AmEx yet; so, I’ll be able to survive the weekend. I have to pay the card off by April, so if you know anyone getting married, please recommend me!

This workshop is going to be so much fun! I hope I learn a lot! Here’s what I’ll be learning: www.lostamerica.com

I’ll be heading home sometime on Monday. John will be here taking care of the kitties!

Global Warming is Caused by Humans

Yes, it is! I know lots of people don’t think so, but it is! I trust the scientists who study the environment and the glaciers. I trust the researchers and climatologists! They are intelligent people, educated and experienced. They know MORE than Sarah Palin. They know MORE than George Bush. They actually KNOW what causes global warming: people!

In order to solve this problem, we MUST acknowledge and investigate the cause. We must find a way to fix the damage we have done. Please conserve energy, please recycle, and please also watch this video!

Dilemma

So, I had an incredible interview today with BRC, and I really love the company. They have longevity, a creative and relaxed environment, and a great benefits package. Sadly, the position I have applied for is an entry level position. Though I know I would kick-ass at it, the pay goes along with the ‘entry level’ salary range. I don’t know what that is, but I have a feeling it might be $20K or more less than what I am used to living on.

With the economy in a shambles, Directors taking salary cuts and job cuts to Manager positions, is this my only option – to drop the salary I am accustomed to? Could I live on $20K less than I have been making? No. I can’t. I’d have to step up my photography business, but that’s not a guaranteed income.

I haven’t been offered the position, so it’s a bit premature to worry; but, I like to be prepared to make a decision if they call me. There is potential for growth, but only after a few years, as they want someone to stay in this position for years to come. I understand that, and I’d be completely comfortable with that if the salary was right. I really need to start thinking about my priorities.

I do really want the position, as I want to be a part of this company! I know the job would be easy, but could I survive on a huge salary cut? I really don’t know. I have done my budget a LOT, and the most I’ve been able to cut out is $6K. Eeek. I don’t think I could find a way to cut $20K. Ugh, I really hope they offer me a reasonable salary and call me soon! I would love this job! I am so conflicted.

Sunday Already?

It’s 1:25am, and I’m watching Sleepless in Seattle. Last night, John & I hung out at home. We watched Dan in Real Life and then played some Pokemon Puzzle League. John’s so good at it now that he’s a level 7 and still beating me (I’m a level 6).

Saturday morning – I slept in, got a shower, had some cereal, made some homemade business cards for my LA Wedding Woman officiating business, then got ready and headed to Downtown LA’s Kyoto Hotel in Little Tokyo! I was officiating a wedding for a great couple – Lana & Ivan. The hotel was incredible, and Lana was so beautiful! Since I got there pretty early, I helped decorate the reception area. They really didn’t have any help otherwise, so I am glad I was able to be there for them! They were very grateful.

The ceremony went very smoothly and the reception was fun. I was invited to stay and sit with the guests. The photographers that they hired were sitting away from guests and had a ‘vendor meal’ instead of a guest dinner. The restaurant made me a fantastic vegetarian guest dinner. I made some new friends – Omari (from Long Beach) and Betty (from Corona). I plan to stay in touch with them. Omari is going to the next Keegan Michael Key and Betty reminds me of a mix of my mom’s friends back east and my friend Emily.

Most of the guests left by 9pm, and I stayed until about 9:30pm – leaving with the remaining guests. It was a really fun wedding. There were 5 kids, all of whom seemed to have a better time than most of the adults!

Sadly, the photographers left just after the cake-cutting and missed the kids dancing. They also missed the couple saying good-bye to everyone. It was around 8pm that they left. I really was surprised, but maybe they were only hired for a certain amount of hours. Still, I wish I had had my camera! They were a husband and wife team from Santa Clarita and they were shooting with expensive equipment – both Canon 1D Mark II’s and some high end lenses. I was sad that they were charging less than me. I know that they didn’t work as long as I normally do, and they can probably charge less since they’re married and aren’t splitting the payment with a non-family member. Still, I really want to get more photography jobs. I don’t want to lower my prices, but people are broke these days! Brides are hiring cheap photogs or using friends as their photogs.

Anyhow, I got home, edited some pix from the past year (I have a huge back-log), and watched the end of Titanic (depressing); and, then while the photos exported from Lightroom, I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding and hung out with the kitties.

It’s now officially Sunday, and I am typing this recap while watching Sleepless in Seattle. I’ve seen the end of this movie many times, but the beginning only once. I’m getting kinda tired.

Tomorrow, I’m going back to downtown LA to shoot Greg & Katy’s engagement photos. I can’t wait! I love shooting in downtown 🙂

It’s Friday!

This week was interesting. Our congress passed an incredibly ridiculous bill that will hopefully help stabilize the markets. I just hope it helps to increase jobs!

I do have an interview on Monday with a really fun, creative company in Burbank. Wish me luck!!!

My kitten has become even more cuddly than ever! She spends most of the day napping, but when she’s ready to cuddle, she means it! She’s growing up so fast!

My business cards and post cards came today. They look amazing! I am so happy with them! Now, where do I leave them to drum up business?

I am performing a wedding ceremony for a couple tomorrow at the Kyoto Hotel in Downtown LA tomorrow night. The hotel is gorgeous!!!

On Sunday, I am shooting engagement photos for my friends Greg & Katy. It better not rain! Today was so beautiful!!! Michele & I are shooting their wedding in late October!

Oh, the debate! Yeah, hahahahahaha. Palin needs to learn how to ANSWER questions! She clearly stated that she may not answer the questions as expected. During new topics, she constantly went back to points in which she was given a dedicated amount of time to speak earlier! Okay, this is NOT acceptable! You do not ignore your debate host. You do not ignore the citizens of the US and just say whatever the hell you have memorized! You answer questions asked of you. How can you expect to be VP if you won’t even answer what was asked of you?! We’ve HAD that for 8 years – deception, topic-changes and naivety. We need change, and we need it now! Vote Obama!!!!!

I am hungry. I wish I had food here!

Debate on Health-Care

Both candidates are doing very well sharing their views and enhancing their tickets. I am very scared; however, about McCain’s healthcare plan. There are millions of Americans who CANNOT get health insurance. It’s not about money, it’s about the insurance companies denying coverage! I was denied private health-care due to a 2-week bout of tendinitis that I had in college. WTF! I can’t get insurance because of this? I had to apply for insurance again and again (leaving out some of my history) in order to get insurance. I hated doing that, but I need coverage. If I get breast cancer and don’t have insurance, I WILL die!

For all those companies who will no longer carry group coverage (which is the only way that millions of Americans can even get coverage at all), they will be screwed! People will DIE! John McCain will have to live with this, but I will never ever forgive him!

Obama is our only hope for insurance coverage for ALL Americans! We all deserve it, even if it’s not as awesome as the insurance that privately insured people can get… we still NEED coverage! Privatizing health-care will cause people to DIE! I am NOT exaggerating!

California Propositions – Read and Pass Along

With the election just over a month away, it’s time to really familiarize yourself with the propositions that affect ALL of us in this great state!

Prop 1A – YES
Hell yeah! A high speed train from LA to San Fran! I wish we had this right now! Let’s get this thing built!!! Click to learn more

Prop 2 – HELL YES
Requires that farms use more humane conditions for animals raised for food. Though I am a vegetarian, I respect that my friends and family members eat meat. I still believe there are ways to help the animals raised for food live better lives and not endure as much pain as they are currently subjected to!

Here are the details:
* Requires that calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn around freely.
* Exceptions made for transportation, rodeos, fairs, 4-H programs, lawful slaughter, research and veterinary purposes.
* Provides misdemeanor penalties, including a fine not to exceed $1,000 and/or imprisonment in jail for up to 180 days.

This isn’t too much to ask, seriously! Vote YES on Prop 2! Click for more info: Click here!

Prop 3 – Yes, Sounds Good
This is a Children’s Hospital Bond Act, Grand Program and Statute. More hospitals are always helpful! Here are the details:
* Authorizes $980,000,000 in bonds, to be repaid from state’s General Fund, to fund the construction, expansion, remodeling, renovation, furnishing and equipping of children’s hospitals.
* Designates that 80 percent of bond proceeds go to hospitals that focus on children with illnesses such as leukemia, cancer, heart defects, diabetes, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis.
* Requires that qualifying children’s hospitals provide comprehensive services to a high volume of children eligible for governmental programs and meet other requirements.
* Designates that 20 percent of bond proceeds go to University of California general acute care hospitals

Prop 4 – NO WAY!
This prop, if passed, creates a waiting period and parental notification before allowing a teen to have an abortion. I know this is a tricky one. Parents WANT to know what their teens are doing, of course; but, there are very violent, abusive parents who have raped their children and would beat them if they ever went to the authorities (even if just for an abortion of the incestuous child). These kids NEED protection! Some of them are afraid to go to the cops, but they are willing to go to clinics and abort a fetus created from abuse and incest!

Another thing to think about is the fact that these kids, if not allowed to get abortions without parental consent would likely try ‘hanger abortions’ on themselves… possibly killing themselves and likely ruining any changes of ever having a baby in the future. Some would hide their pregnancies and drink and do drugs to cause a miscarriage. Others would have the baby and possibly leave it to die in a dumpster. Yes, this HAS happened to frighten teens!

Vote NO to protect teens! When it comes to incest and rape, we are their only hope! Here are some details: click here, here, and here.

Prop 5 – Yes
This is the non-violent offender rehab act. Our prisons are overcrowded, and people who smoke pot (illegally) are taking up our tax dollars and room in prison. These people, as well as other druggies, don’t belong in jail. They need rehab, and a rehab system that works! This prop, if voted in, will provide funding to help these non-violent offenders get help!

I understand that parents, like Martin Sheen, want this to fail because they believe that their children should face hard jail time to “wake them up” to encourage them to quit drugs. I totally understand and respect this; however, too many pot smokers end up in jail (for a day, a month, or more) and they really don’t need to be there. They need rehab! Our prisons are overcrowded and our tax dollars would be better spent elsewhere than on pot smokers. Here’s a link: click here.

Prop 6 – Leaning No
The Safe Neighborhoods Act. I am leaning no because this bill will divert funds from California’s schools, hospitals and childcare centers. It is also said to target poor people, forcing recipients of public housing subsidies to submit to annual criminal background checks with the intention of withdrawing the housing subsidies of people with recent criminal convictions. This is very discriminatory! Click here to read more about this.

Prop 7 – Leaning No
Renewable energy bill. You’d think I’d be for this off the bat, but I’m concerned about smaller businesses who are working on innovative ways to create renewable energy. There is evidence that this bill could put them out of business. We need innovation! We also need renewable energy, now! I’m so torn here. After reading this, I’m really leaning NO. Please read for yourself and decide, but I’m really feeling NO on this one.

Prop 8 – NO Freakin’ Way! No, No, No!
This prop, if passed, eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry! Okay, first of all, what right does a governing body to tell people who love each other that they cannot be together in love and marriage, by each other’s bedside at the hospital when ill, and able to make decisions about their loved ones’ things after death?!

It’s not fair to just give that right to hetero-couples! It’s just unfair, discriminatory, and unjust! Ugh, makes me sick! Not to mention, California has already approved marriages for gay and lesbian couples, and many have married. We cannot take that away from them. This is a very cruel and hateful proposition! Stop the Hate, No on Prop 8!! Click here for more info!

Prop 9 – No
Criminal Justice System changes. This is a tough one. The victim’s families want a yes vote on prop 9, injecting them into the justice system more than they are legally allowed at this point. Sadly, they are emotional and biased (with good reason to be). If I were a victim’s family member, I am sure I’d feel the same way.

However, there are soooo many cases where criminals were incarcerated due to self-defense (especially women who were abused). It would make it much harder for them to make their cases and it would extend their time in jail. This is scary. Please read these cases: click here. Here’s a link for info from both sides: click here.

Prop 10 – No
Alternative Fuel and Renewable Energy bill. This bill was created by a man who owns a natural gas company. He has raised money to put this measure on the ballot. Energy groups and economic groups agree that it will NOT help the environment. It will make this man very wealthy, but will not remotely solve the problem! Here is more information.

Prop 11 – No
Redistricting. I am usually for this, but it has to be done right. It appears that this bill will help mask budgets, hiding the truth from the public. There is a lot of vague allowances for those hired in new districts. I think they need to rewrite this bill to include transparency and auditing! For now, I vote No! Click here for more info.

Prop 12 – I Guess So, Yeah
Loans for Veterans. I am mostly for this, but it also includes veterans who never left US soil (but worked on war efforts). What makes their life more important than mine? Why should they get an easy, low-interest home loan, but I can’t? Well, that does annoy me. However, MOST veterans have actually fought in wars. Many are wounded and cannot work. This would be very helpful to them. I won’t hold them back even though I think some people will take advantage of this. I won’t hold them back for selfish reasons… though I want a home too, and I know I work hard! Oh well, let them have their homes. If I can’t own a home, at least someone else (who’s worked hard) will. Click here for more info.

Conflicted

I woke up this morning feeling awful that I am no longer contributing to taxes for schools, roads, public works, etc. I thought about the fact that if more people get laid-off, who will pay taxes? Who will support our schools, roads and infrastructure?! It scares me a lot… knowing that less and less people are working, and that all of these people are no longer supporting the world we live in (locally and nationally).

I know I have to find a way to pay my bills and that should be my first priority. It is, honestly. I still worry about the fate of the world I live in and how it will affect me in the long-run by not contributing to it. I felt sick to my stomach when I woke up. I feel so helpless.

To make matters worse, I turned on the TV to see the House didn’t pass the bail-out. Well, I do understand that they are running for office and the people who will vote for them are calling them to say not to vote for it; but, we need to do something! Nobody likes this situation, but we can’t let the market fall apart. Lucky for me, I’m not retiring in a few years; but, there are many people who have lost their entire life’s savings in the market this week! Can they retire? No! Companies who rely on the market to keep their business alive and pay their employees are suffering too! They will be laying off more people this week just to stay afloat! This is bad, really really bad!

Then, to piss me off while I was down, I was subjected to advertisements for things that I normally would ignore. 1. vacation commercials – come to such and such, now 50% off hotels! Who the fuck has money to travel to the Caribbean for a family vacation?! 2. Swiffer Wet Jet – sanitary, yes. Wasteful, YES! Reuse your damn mop and save the environment! Hot water and map fluid will kill the germs! Swiffers are such an environmental hazard, geeze! 3. Sleeping Beauty on DVD for “a limited time only” really upsets me. What if I don’t have a job before this movie goes back into the Disney vault?! I really want this movie, but can’t justify the expense right now. It pisses me off that one of my childhood memories is being offered to me for a limited time, and I can’t buy it due to the economy and being jobless! Grrrrrrr!!!!!!

I’m exhausted and have no freakin’ clue what to do with myself. It’s after 5pm, no more jobs are being posted, and yet… I feel unaccomplished. It is painful in so many ways.

Rock the Vote!

On Friday night, I went to a bar in NoHo to watch the Presidential Debate on HD with some friends. Then, headed over to the Towers to watch the commentary afterward. Called it an early night and headed home to relax.

Saturday started earlier than I’d like, but I was heading to Downtown LA to volunteer with Rock the Vote at the We the People Festival. Pix up here! I got a bunch of people to sign up, but I wish I were able to stay and sign up more! There were a lot of people disenchanted with the “system” and refused to sign-up to vote. Bah! Well, they have no room to complain about anything if they don’t vote! So, hopefully they’ll wake up one day and vote!

Saturday night – Bobby, Josef & Megg picked us up and we headed down to Knotts Berry Farm for the Halloween Haunt. Ryan gifted us entrance into the park. Thank you, Ryan!!!! We had a lot of traffic and a long line, but we were able to see all the mazes we wanted to! We also went on Silver Bullet, which is a super-fun coaster! Sadly, the Excellerator was closed 🙁

Sunday – woke up at 11:30am, which was nice! Spent most of the day relaxing. I put up some pix from the Haunt, cleaned the apt, then walked to dinner with John. We had a gift card to Olive Garden, which was great since we now have so much food left over that I’ll have two days worth of lunch or dinner!

Right now, watching 12 Monkeys and going through pix on my hard-drive. Tomorrow, back to the job hunt.

No Cookies

I don’t have the ingredients I need to make cookies, and I’m too crampy to drive. Aurora’s been in the same spot on the bed all day. Every time I walk by, she just looks at me. I wish I could enjoy being that lazy. I’m going insane…

Another Restless Day

It’s so hard to sit here and job hunt all day, finding little (if anything) to apply for. My back hurts, but that may be due to my week as an uber-female.

I applied for one great position at WB; but, even though John can send an e-recommendation for me, it’s still me against thousands of others. I hope to hear from them though. I’ve not heard back from more than 2 of the hundreds of other jobs I’ve applied for over the past few weeks. It’s very discouraging.

CNN has been my best friend and worst enemy – keeping me company all day long, but all-the-while reminding me that things are not getting better. I am really worried about our economy. I sincerely hope and wish and pray that we find a way to cap executive salaries. Imagine that each CEO of a large company makes about $1 million a year. That’s 20 $50K jobs! So, if you pay the CEO about what the President makes (~ $450K), then that still leaves 11 new jobs!!! That’s great! I know that there are many high-level executives, and if all of them get cut down to $450,000, that’s even more money for the company to grow and hire employees! I am sure that CEOs and Execs will be thoroughly pissed, but they can still invest money in the markets and make their millions that way. It’s just that I don’t think that any company should pay someone that much! No job is THAT tough! Firefighters don’t even make $100K per year!!! Anyhow, I really hope Congress doesn’t listen to corporate lobbyists here. They really need to make a law that limits executive salaries. I think it will do great things for the economy. Seriously, everyone can live off of $450K… so, there’s no reason to make more than that! Hell, I’d be ecstatic to make $100K one day!

As for the debate, I completely agree with Obama that our future President needs to be able to handle more than one thing at a time. McCain can take a few hours out of his day and debate Obama! The American people not only want it, but many of them NEED it! We need to hear from our future leader(s) to give us hope that we will make it through this. Dumbass Bush didn’t help last night by worrying everyone. He basically said ‘we’re screwed if we don’t give this money to Wall Street now,’ but what can we do? I’m sitting, jobless, in my apartment! I can write to my Congressional leaders all I want, but they aren’t going to listen to me. There’s a committee assigned to this crisis, and it’ll be up to them. So, what I need and what I want, is to hear McCain and Obama discuss this issue and more, tomorrow night! The sooner the better. I want hope that I will be employable in an economy that may one day rise again! I need some confidence thrown at me, NOW!

I’m going to go make some cookies! Bah!

The Weeks Fly By…

Each week is flying by, quickly stripping me of my hope to find a job SOON! Soon has come and gone, even if it is revived each day.

The past few days have been very tough for me. I learned that the HR Mgmt position I interviewed for cannot hire me until a bill passes on November 4th that could severely affect their business. Even so, I am not a shoe-in. Others are in the running, though they really did like me. Nov seems so far away and bills are coming in now…

I spend each day looking at job sites and making calls to recruiters and local companies. Usually, I get a few resumes out for some job possibilities. The past two days have been totally fruitless. I have not seen any matches or near-matches to send my resume and cover letter for. I have not heard back from recruiters who promised to call me back either. This is very disappointing. I know I am very qualified in Project Management and Human Resources. I love working with people – teaching, training, interviewing, managing, helping! I just don’t know why there are no jobs for me. I assume it is because Director level people with over 10 years in the field are lowering their salary requirements and taking my jobs. I also assume it is because the market is extremely competitive and until they bring me in and get to know my personality, they have no way to distinguish me from the next person. My hope is for someone to give my resume a chance and bring me in! I know they’d love me!

In other news, I need to go to the bank and the post office… I’m going to get a shower and take a walk. I need to go outside for a while.
