Independence Weekend Has Just Begun

It’s only Friday night, but I feel like I’ve had a full weekend already!

Yesterday, Nicole & I were at work and noticed everyone had abandoned the office. When we figured out where everyone was, we decided to join them.. at the bar next door. I had a few too many drinks and had to stay at the office until 7:30pm drinking water.

At 8:30pm, I met up with Brian & Brian at Saddle Ranch in Universal City. We had many yummy drinks and I met a few of their friends… very nice people! I had a great time! Sadly, I wasn’t able to get home; so, Greg, Matt & John had to come pick me up and take me back to the Towers – where I passed out for a few hours.

When I woke up at 3:30am, John was drunk and watching Emmett play Mario Kart. I wanted to go home, so I drove John & I back home in his car. We watched Dress My Nest, then passed out around 4:15am. We slept pretty late and both woke up with huge headaches, even though we had lots of water and vitamins before bed.

We went to breakfast at Billy’s Deli, picked up my car at Universal, then came home and passed out for a few hours. At 4:30pm, I picked up Penny and drove to Sarah, Casey & Emily’s place in Lomita. Missy was already there. We had some yummy food, good conversation, watched Emily dance, saw some neighborhood fireworks, then headed home around 9:30pm.

On the 110, passing the Forum in Downtown LA, Skid Row’s “I Remember You” was on my ipod and an amazing fireworks finale was taking place right next to us! It was truly incredible!!!

Booze & Blood

I am at work right now… it’s 7:20pm. I went to the bar with my co-workers and my boss was picking up the tab and ordering more rounds. I am not working though. I am on the phone with Penny, on IM with Missy and my hand has a cut on it that I just scratched and is now bleeding. Bah!

Everyone left, and I have the key to lock up. I want to go home, but I am not sober yet. Grrrr. More water…

Camper Time!

Somehow, time keeps on slippin’ into the future…
It’s Thursday, and I am just getting a few min to recap last weekend. This week flew by!

Friday – Josef, Anne & I drove to Berkeley to Anne’s place. We got up there around 1:30am.

Saturday – We woke up around 10am, got ready and walked to breakfast. Our waitress was wearing a Bitches for Obama shirt. Go Berkeley! After breakfast, Josef & I drove into the city. I wanted to see the Sea Lions, but it took us 2 hours to get into the city. We later learned it was because it was the end of Gay Pride week and that there were city wide activities attracting people from all over the world to the area.

We decided to go straight to our hotel and walk around Japantown, where we were staying. We met up with Glenn & Beth, who’s room we were staying in, and went looking for a bar around 4:30pm. We finally found one – the Boom Boom Room! The bartender there makes a great Madres!

Josef, Beth & I were told about a party on the 6th floor of our building, so we went to check it out. That’s where we met Spike & Mona! Mona is a wild woman with an amazing personality! She was telling stories from her past and having a smoke out on the balcony. Spike was a laid back guy who offered me many varieties of Pepridge Farm cookies to sample. He was a distributor! To me, that made their room heaven! Cookies, cookies, and more cookies! Morst showed up to hang out for a bit and so did Fred (via balcony peek-around).

Josef & I finally got in the mood for real food though, so we went to Pizza Inferno and met up with everyone else in Japantown afterward. Father Dan & Lady Laura were there too! His banana bread is the reason I was even up in San Fran for the show… I missed Camper Van Beethoven at the camp-out… the bread had me making new constellations all night by my tent. This show, no bread for me!

We walked down to the Fillmore, and I spent some time roaming around the place and talking to the Obama Campaign volunteers. This venue is incredible! I wish it were closer! We went downstairs for the opening act, Cathead. They were great!

At 10:15pm, Camper took the stage. Josef & I were in 2nd row, not far from the free water igloo (yay). Camper played an incredible set, just over 2 hours. I loved every moment of it! We weren’t overly crowded in our personal space, the people were all dancing and having fun, the music sounded great, and the vibe was just right!

After the show, Josef, Beth & I went back to our hotel room. Beth passed out immediately, and Josef & I tried to decide if we should go find a party or pass out as well. Within minutes, Morst, the Mad Russian, and the Obama campaign volunteers came by to hang out. We ended up talking til after 3:30am! Very cool people!

In the morning, Josef & I went to Japantown Mall for a bit while Morst and Glenn got ready. Beth left earlier to head to the airport. We then picked up Morst and Glenn, then headed to Q for lunch. Yum! Great food all around!

We dropped Morst & Glenn back off in Japantown, then started our drive back home to LA. We stopped at Foster’s Freeze on the way home, and arrived back home before 8pm! What a fun weekend!!!

Do You Believe in Serendipity?

Days after I was born, there were photos of me with cats in my crib. Throughout my toddler years, I saw cats as my big brothers and sisters. They took care of me – babysat me, cleaned me, played with me, and gave me lots of love and attention.

My cat Aslin took to me immediately. As a 3-yr old, my best friend was my cat. He was very smart and listened to everything I told him. He was great at following commands, very unusual for a cat. The funny thing is, he ONLY listened to me.

When I was 4, Aslin and my mom’s cat Puff had kittens. I named one of them Aslin because he looked just like his dad. Sadly, my parents gave Aslin (the dad) away to my mom’s best friend in NJ. I always asked about him, but only ever saw him two more times in my life. Aslin, the kitten, became my kindred spirit. He & I connected just like his father & I did.

Aslin slept on my bed, sat on my lap, and always hung out wherever I was in the house. Since I raised him from a kitten, I called him my son. He was my world, my life, my everything!

Age 11, Aslin is diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. His hair begins to fall out, his body has scabs from him scratching too much, but I still held him in my arms every chance I got. He was my baby! On April 7, 1990, Aslin passed away. My mom’s boyfriend had to pry him from my arms, with me crying desparately to keep holding him. He said Aslin wouldn’t leave me as long as I held him, and he was in pain and needed to pass on. Before I said good-bye, I asked him to come back to me. I know he heard me.

A few months later, my mom, sister and I went to see a movie at a run down theater in a run down mall (most shops out of business). We looked in the window of a pet store that was going out of business and saw a small Persian kitty alone in a cage. The store was closed, so we couldn’t go in to see him. I have no clue what movie we saw; all I could think about was the lonely kitty.

The next day, when I came home from school, there was an adorable little gray Persian waiting for me in my mom’s bed. She named him Casey, after her first computer. She was an artist and a writer, so that computer was very special to her. Back in the day, having a computer was a really big deal.

Casey had so many of Aslin’s personality traits, and his coloring. They were both gray Persians who were very loyal to me, and who were exceedingly loving. They also had many of the same facial expressions. It was great to see Aslin alive in Casey! I felt truly happy to have my little boy back in my life!

Over the years, Casey was with me through everything. He was always there for me when I was upset (which as a teen, was a lot). He was so sweet and loving, and the most amazing cat I had ever known. Everyone who got to know Casey loved him. He had the most incredibly loving disposition! In his older years, I used to get him shaved like a lion. He looked like a Dr. Seuss creature!

Casey was the last of my cats to know my mom, who died when I was 16. He kept me connected to her, and when he passed away (at age 16), I mourned very deeply. I had never had a loss so great since my mom died. On the day we took him to the vet to say good-bye, I said to him, “come back to me… let me recognize you easily, and make sure you end up in my arms. I need you. I love you!”

Since losing Casey, I have incurred many financial hardships with my other babies – Dagan and Aurora (surgeries, medicine, vet visits, and diet changes). No price is too high when it comes to my kids! Sadly, though, John was out of work, and my job was very unstable. I was really afraid of being able to feed myself for a while. Still, not a month went by where someone (a friend, stranger or my vet’s office) wouldn’t ask me if I could take in a new cat or kitty. With my finances strained and Dagan & Aurora’s health, I always had to say no. It broke my heart every time. I still feel terrible thinking about all of the kitties that I couldn’t take in. I kept wishing people would stop asking, but everyone knew just how much I loved kitties; so, the inquiries kept coming. Some were very very difficult to turn down. I have shed many many tears over these inquiries. Nothing is harder than saying no to a cat in need or a friend in need to find a home for a cat in need. Breaks my heart! 🙁

Still, I knew if Casey / Aslin ever came back, there’d be no way I could possibly say “no” regardless of my situation. I was hoping to have a few more years to get settled financially and to take care of Dagan and Aurora; but, I don’t control the universe or its timing… so, without any hesitation, I want to let you all know that Casey has come back to me! Please welcome Gracie to our family!

John & I met Gracie when she was just a few weeks old. Our friend Kelly was fostering a mother cat and her kittens. We went over to hang out with Kelly and meet the kitties. They were so cute! I remember falling in love with Gracie immediately! At the time, I was very solid in my decision not to adopt her. I didn’t have a job, nor did I want to bring a new kitty into my home right now.

Over the past two months, every time John mentioned Kelly and the kitties, I’d think about Gracie. I secretly had hoped she was still there so I could see her again. I wanted her to find a great home, but I also really wanted to see her again first.

On Tuesday, John went over to see Kelly and the kitties. When I saw him later that night, he said that Gracie was still available, but all of the other kitties had been adopted out. I was very surprised, but somewhat excited to hear this (for some reason).

The next day, John & I talked about Gracie on IM. He gave me Kelly’s IM; and, she and I talked about her too. What sent me over the edge is when she told me her birthday (Casey’s birthday), and that Gracie had been very nervous at the pet adoptions (Kelly believed this was because Gracie was meant to come home with me). Immediately, I knew… Casey was back! He wanted to make sure he ended up in my arms; so, a pet adoption would have been very scary indeed! I burst into tears of happiness, and ran to the bathroom (at work) to clean my face. I just couldn’t believe it! Casey was back!!!

I immediately called Robin (the adoption supervisor) and arranged to fill out an application. Even though I wasn’t ready for another kitty, there was no way I was going to let Casey spirit end up anywhere but back in my life!

Gracie was born April 1, 2008. Casey was born April 1, 1990.
Gracie is gray, and has the same kitten face as Aslin I.
Gracie & Casey both love(d) to sleep on their backs on my lap with their heads hanging off my knees.

I am sure that there will be many more similarities that I’ll notice in time; but, I also know that Gracie is not just carrying the spirit of Aslin & Casey, she has her own personality traits and expressions that will shine brightly!

Sandy will love having a kitty to play with. Aurora and Dagan will like having Sandy’s attention directed elsewhere. I talked to my vet. He said that a playful kitten would be a very good idea to divert Sandy’s energy away from Dagan & Aurora. Luckily, John has offered to take care of Gracie’s financial needs (food, litter, insurance, vet bills), as I am strapped with Aurora and Dagan’s medical expenses. He’s a wonderful boyfriend! I love how much he loves our kitties!!!

I can’t wait for you to all meet Gracie! I will have many more photos up soon! She moves in on Saturday night! Let me know when you want to come meet her!

Yosemite Fun!

On Friday night, John & I drove up to Yosemite for the weekend. We stopped at Sonic on the way up, and I ate some yummy, terrible food (fried everything). We got in just before 3am and passed out immediately. Thankfully, Dave & Michele set up our tent for us earlier in the day.

We woke up just before 10am on Saturday, and Dave & Michele we already nearing the top of Half Dome. John dropped me off at Yosemite Falls and went back to the camp site to read. I hopped on and off the Valley Floor bus, taking photos at most of the stops for a while. I walked a LOT too!

The best part of the afternoon was at Happy Isles when a 1yr old bear showed up in a tree near the bus stop. Lots of tourists were there watching him. The ranger chased him away, back into the forest where he’d be safe. I got a few photos though, so check out this link!

In the evening, John, Dave, Michele & I grilled up some dinner and had a few drinks and smores! We were all pretty tired, so passed out earlier than expected. In the morning, we had some bagels, then said good-bye to Dave & Michele. They headed out, but John & I stopped at Curry Village for showers.

We tried to go to the Mariposa Grove, but the parking lot was full and the buses heading into the Grove were also full. We saw two go by before we gave up and left the park.

We had a long drive home. It was really really hot outside! Thankfully, we got home for dinner, fed the cats, and settled in. It was a really fun weekend!!

New Job – 1st Day Recap

My first day at my new job went really well. I met my co-workers, was walked through an overview of the company and the ticket industry, set up my email and contacts, then spend the late afternoon QA’ing the pre-launch site. I Got a Job!

I will be working for an internet start-up, pre-launch! It’s in La Canada, only 5.5 miles from my apartment! Here’s the email that got me the job…

Dear Human Resource Manager,

I am writing to inquire about the Project Coordinator / Facilitator position. I live in Glendale, and have spent the past two years working for Disney Stores North America (headquarters) in Project Coordination and Management.

Due to mass-layoffs at Disney, I am available immediately, and I live in North Glendale (close to the 2 and the 134 freeways, near La Canada). This position sounds perfect, but the salary is much lower than I have been making. My most recent salary is $—–, with $—– prior to that.

If you decide to upgrade this position to that of Project Manager or add more responsibility and salary to the Project Coordinator position, I would be extremely interested. I am looking for a great organization to become a part of, very long term. I have ambitious goals to reach VP level within 10 years, as I am 30 – with a wealth of management history already built up.

I also have experience in the web industry. I worked for a dot-com during the boom in the late 90’s as a Web Team Manager, hiring and supervising designers and programmers. I have proficient html and photoshop experience myself!

Please review my resume and feel free to contact me at any time. I would love to learn more about your company; and, if there is an opportunity for us to work together, I would love to explore it!
==================

Confidence goes a long way! I am very excited! I start on Wednesday, June 11th!

Another Week Almost Over

I can’t believe it’s Thursday! Time really flies when you are unemployed!

My toes are cold, and I wish I had a faster microwave to cook my lunch! 600 watts is really crappy!

The river rocks on my coffee table look more appetizing than the fat-free slice of cheese I just ate! Yuk!

Aurora’s been messing with me all morning! I pet her, then she wants to play. I ended up taking the blanket out from under her to warm my feet; so, she decided to massage my leg (with claws) and chew on my head. Shows me to disturb an adorable fat kitty!

I’m watching the replay of the MTV Movie Awards, and the Pussycat Dolls are about to come on. What the hell happened to them? I never knew anything about them until yesterday, when I watched the 1st half of the E! True Hollywood Story on them. They started out as a Vintage Cabaret performing act, with Christina Applegate as one of the performers! Now, they are a glittery pop group with sucky songs and no class whatsoever! So sad!

Ok, lunch is ready – maybe! It’s been 5 minutes on high, and my veggies are sure to be somewhat warm by now!

Obama Time!

Obama is 4 delegates away from the nomination! Woohoo! I don’t know if he should choose Hilary as VP or not. I think she’s not the best choice for his vision, but will it help rally up her voters? I feel a true Democrat would support him regardless, because NOBODY who claims to be Dem would want McCain in office! Voting independent is nice and all, but it only hurts the Dems chances…

Being unemployed sucks; but, I have been able to keep up with CNN, which I leave on in the background all day (not headline news – that’s too repetitive)!

I have an interview tomorrow for a start up internet company nearby. They aren’t paying much, but I know I could do the job. It would be nice to have a job again, and work with people who actually care about me! At Disney, I feel like only my work-friends cared about me, but the company didn’t care at all. Obviously, they didn’t care at all…

Anyhow, Go Obama!!!

PS. If you live in CA, go vote! No on 98 (save rent control) and Yes on 99!
